UENPS and NeoIPC partnership: join our Survey on Infection Prevention and Control in the NICU
We are pleased to announce a new agreement between UENPS and the European Project NeoIPC! Together, we are organizing an important survey on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) practices in the NICU.
This survey is supported by the Italian Society of Neonatology, which has helped to refine the questionnaire. The focus of the survey will be on Kangaroo Care and other NICU-specific IPC practices across Europe and beyond.
The NeoIPC project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, aims to improve IPC practices in neonatal care units.
By participating in this survey, you will gain valuable insights into the practices currently in use in your unit. Once the results are published, you’ll be able to compare your data with those from other countries, helping to identify best practices that should be implemented.
To participate in the survey, take a moment to fill out our form!

Empowering Neonatal Care in Ethiopia
The two-day meeting, held on September 3-4, 2024 in Addis Ababa, was the kick-off meeting of the “Strengthening Neonatology in Ethiopia” project, in collaboration with Doctors with Africa CUAMM, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, the Ethiopian Pediatric Society, and the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health. The meeting was very useful and productive, providing an opportunity to get to know and establish connections with a group of Ethiopian neonatologists.
We were able to plan the main initiatives to be undertaken and the topics to be addressed based on the survey conducted by UENPS in 44 NICUs in Ethiopia. We begin with the real needs of the people and seek ways and solutions to improve the care of newborns.
Special attention will be given to Tigray, with the Shire Hospital, and the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, with the Black Lion Specialized Hospital, where the respective NICUs will be renovated, improved, and equipped. Among other objectives: a major conference in January 2025, where 20 Ethiopian pediatricians will be trained, thanks to the involvement of UENPS neonatologists and the Ethiopian Pediatric Society (EPS).
During the training period, the Ethiopian pediatricians, in turn, will train 125 midwives and nurses in neonatal resuscitation. The expected beneficiaries, thanks to the comprehensive and cross-cutting action, include more than 20,700 women who will receive care and over 3,700 newborns who will be treated in the NICUs of the two hospitals.

Abstract
Introduction: Laryngeal mask airway (LMA) use in neonatal resuscitation is limited despite existing evidence and recommendations. This survey investigated the knowledge and experience of healthcare providers on the use of the LMA and explored barriers and solutions for implementation.
Methods: This online, cross-sectional survey on LMA in neonatal resuscitation involved healthcare professionals of the Union of European Neonatal and Perinatal Societies (UENPS).
Results: A total of 858 healthcare professionals from 42 countries participated in the survey. Only 6% took part in an LMA-specific course. Some delivery rooms were not equipped with LMA (26.1%). LMA was mainly considered after the failure of a face mask (FM) or endotracheal tube (ET), while the first choice was limited to neonates with upper airway malformations. LMA and FM were considered easier to position but less effective than ET, while LMA was considered less invasive than ET but more invasive than FM. Participants felt less competent and experienced with LMA than FM and ET. The lack of confidence in LMA was perceived as the main barrier to its implementation in neonatal resuscitation. More training, supervision, and device availability in delivery wards were suggested as possible actions to overcome those barriers.
Conclusion: Our survey confirms previous findings on limited knowledge, experience, and confidence with LMA, which is usually considered an option after the failure of FM/ET. Our findings highlight the need for increasing the availability of LMA in delivery wards. Moreover, increasing LMA training and having an LMA expert supervisor during clinical practice may improve the implementation of LMA use in neonatal clinical practice.
